Chapter 36
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Sara asked as they made their way toward the elevator. âFocus on what we do best?â
âIt means they donât want us getting in their way.â John stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sara make a face. Like she was expecting him to say they were going to do something stupid, like go visit Carmen at her garage. âWeâre not leaving the building. Weâre simply going downstairs to talk to Riley.â
âWhatâs he got to do with this?â
âHe and Harper went to school together. From what I understand, theyâre still pretty close.â
âYou want to tell him the truth? That we think Harper hired someone to kill his wife?â
John shrugged as the elevator door opened. It wasnât the best plan in the world, but they had to do something. Otherwise, Harper was going to wind up dead, just like his wife.
âThe clockâs ticking,â he said, directing Sara to avoid the bullpen. âIf Harper doesnât recant his testimony against Manelli, theyâre going to kill him.â
Sara waited until they were past the group of officers before she asked John if he were serious. Because in her opinion, what he was suggesting was dangerous.
âHow so?â he asked. Someone needed to make Harper to see the light. Who better than a friend?
âWhat if he decides to go after Manelli?â
âHe wonât,â John assured her. âHeâs not stupid.â
Sara sighed as she shook her head. âItâs not a question as to whether or not the man is stupid. You said Harperâs a friend of his.â She paused to give John time to think about what she said. âPut yourself in his shoes. How would you react if you thought Manelli was coming after a friend of yours?â
John stopped and looked around the room. He didnât have to think about it. He knew what he would do if he found himself in that situation. Heâd do whatever it took to make the threat go away. Legal or not. Men like Manelli didnât go away on their own. âYouâve got a point.â
âBut I still think itâs a good idea to talk to him,â she said, lifting some of the guilt John felt for suggesting they manipulate the patrol sergeant. âWe just need to be more subtle.â
âShould we tell him about the email?â John asked. He knew if he were in the sergeantâs shoes, heâd want to know about it.
Sara looked around to make sure there wasnât anyone attempting to eavesdrop on their conversation. âI donât know. If he tells Harper we know about itâ¦â She didnât finish her statement. She didnât need to. John knew what would happen to them if the feds learned they had allowed sensitive information to get passed along to their suspect. Theyâd both be looking for a new job by morning.
âHow about this?â John motioned for her to start walking. âWe tell him we know it wasnât a mob hit. Maybe heâll put the pieces together on his own.
