Chapter 36

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Sara asked as they made their way toward the elevator. “Focus on what we do best?”

“It means they don’t want us getting in their way.” John stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sara make a face. Like she was expecting him to say they were going to do something stupid, like go visit Carmen at her garage. “We’re not leaving the building. We’re simply going downstairs to talk to Riley.”

“What’s he got to do with this?”

“He and Harper went to school together. From what I understand, they’re still pretty close.”

“You want to tell him the truth? That we think Harper hired someone to kill his wife?”

John shrugged as the elevator door opened. It wasn’t the best plan in the world, but they had to do something. Otherwise, Harper was going to wind up dead, just like his wife.

“The clock’s ticking,” he said, directing Sara to avoid the bullpen. “If Harper doesn’t recant his testimony against Manelli, they’re going to kill him.”

Sara waited until they were past the group of officers before she asked John if he were serious. Because in her opinion, what he was suggesting was dangerous.

“How so?” he asked. Someone needed to make Harper to see the light. Who better than a friend?

“What if he decides to go after Manelli?”

“He won’t,” John assured her. “He’s not stupid.”

Sara sighed as she shook her head. “It’s not a question as to whether or not the man is stupid. You said Harper’s a friend of his.” She paused to give John time to think about what she said. “Put yourself in his shoes. How would you react if you thought Manelli was coming after a friend of yours?”

John stopped and looked around the room. He didn’t have to think about it. He knew what he would do if he found himself in that situation. He’d do whatever it took to make the threat go away. Legal or not. Men like Manelli didn’t go away on their own. “You’ve got a point.”

“But I still think it’s a good idea to talk to him,” she said, lifting some of the guilt John felt for suggesting they manipulate the patrol sergeant. “We just need to be more subtle.”

“Should we tell him about the email?” John asked. He knew if he were in the sergeant’s shoes, he’d want to know about it.

Sara looked around to make sure there wasn’t anyone attempting to eavesdrop on their conversation. “I don’t know. If he tells Harper we know about it…” She didn’t finish her statement. She didn’t need to. John knew what would happen to them if the feds learned they had allowed sensitive information to get passed along to their suspect. They’d both be looking for a new job by morning.

“How about this?” John motioned for her to start walking. “We tell him we know it wasn’t a mob hit. Maybe he’ll put the pieces together on his own.
